When planning home renovation, many homeowners prioritise aesthetics and other stuff while
often overlooking a critical component—waterproofing. Yet, India's diverse climate, ranging from
monsoon-prone regions to coastal and arid zones, poses unique challenges that make waterproofing
in home renovation an absolute necessity.
Neglecting waterproofing during the different stages of renovating a home can lead to costly repairs,
structural damage, and even health hazards caused by mould and dampness. More importantly,
integrating waterproofing from the start is a cost-effective decision—it accounts for only about
fraction of the total home renovation cost. In contrast, post-renovation waterproofing and repairs
can be significantly more expensive.
However, these efforts can be futile if they are not done properly. This is why it is crucial to avoid
these common mistakes.
1) Lack of Planning in the Design Phase
Mistake
Waterproofing should be considered during the home renovation stage and not as an afterthought. Delaying waterproofing leads to structural vulnerabilities, higher costs, and water seepage issues that may be difficult and expensive to resolve later.

Interior Designers/ Civil Contractors should integrate waterproofing solutions into the blueprint to ensure long-term durability

2) Poor Surface Preparation and Application (Most Common Mistake)

Applying waterproofing coatings over dusty, dirty, damp, or cracked concrete, leading to peeling or poor adhesion

Surface preparation - Clean the surface thoroughly with a wire brush or pressure washer to remove loose particles and grease.
Allowing sufficient curing time - Ensure the concrete is completely dry. Ensuring the material bonds properly before exposure to moisture
Crack Repair - Use a proper crack-filling putty or specialized sealant (like polymer-modified mortars) to treat cracks and honeycombs.
Applying waterproofing products – Using brushes, rollers, or sprayers as per manufacturer instructions.
3) Choosing the Wrong Waterproofing Material
Mistake
Different areas of a house require specific waterproofing solutions—a one-size-fits-all approach is ineffective. Using rigid waterproofing for areas that experience movement (like roofs or balconies), or using indoor waterproofing for sunny terraces.
Also, many homeowners purchase waterproofing products based on general advice from local suppliers, often leading to poor choices.
Solution
Always consult waterproofing professionals to ensure the correct selection of products suited to the materials and environmental conditions of the site
Use elastomeric (flexible) waterproof coatings for terraces to handle expansion/contraction. Embed Fiberglass Mesh (often referred to as fibre mesh, reinforcing mesh, or Alkali-Resistant (AR) glass fibre mesh) between layers of liquid-applied waterproofing membranes, such as acrylic or polyurethane (PU) coatings, to reinforce the waterproofing system.
Bathrooms, balconies, and verandahs need polyurethane-based waterproofing to resist frequent water exposure
Basements require crystalline or cementitious waterproofing to prevent water ingress from underground moisture

Neglecting or failing to properly waterproof them can lead to water infiltration, compromising the building’s stability.
Solution
Apply a "coving" or "fillet" (rounded corner) using epoxy mortar at floor-to-wall junctions to prevent water accumulation.

5) Incorrect Slope (Improper Drainage)
Mistake
Failure to create a proper slope (1 in 100) toward the drain, resulting in standing water that weakens the membrane.

Redo the screed (floor mortar bed) to ensure a minimum 1.5-2% slope directed towards the drain. Test the drainage before applying the final waterproofing membrane.
6) Rushing the Curing Process (No Water Testing)
Mistake
Allowing foot traffic too early or applying tiles before the membrane has fully cured (dried), leading to pinholes and reduced lifespan.
Solution
Follow manufacturer guidelines for curing times. Crucially, perform a "flood test"—plug the drains, fill the area with 2-3 inches of water, and leave it for 24-48 hours to check for leaks before laying tiles.
7) Using Incompatible Materials
Mistake
Mixing different brands or chemical types (e.g., oil-based over water-based) that can react and cause the coating to fail. Wrong mixing ratios and uneven application thickness are extremely common waterproofing mistakes.
Solution
Use a complete, single-brand system (primer, membrane, sealant) to ensure chemical compatibility.
