Budget Smartly for Tiles

Updated: Apr 21

A worker in a hard hat lays tiles in a room. Foreground shows a budget calculation with tiled samples, cash, a yellow bucket, and tools.

In this blog, we’ll discuss tile installation cost, explore the factors that impact pricing, and ways to achieve lasting results without draining your finances.

Cost Factors Affecting Budgeting for Tile Installation

1. Size & layout of the project - The first step when setting a budget for your project is to measure the area where the tiles will be installed.

2. No. of Tiles Required – Based on the size of tiles you have decided to install, calculate the no. of tiles required to cover the area. Slightly overestimate by at least 10-15% more tiles to allow for cuts, waste, and mistakes. Extra tiling material also comes in handy down the road in case of replacement.

3.  The type of tile material - The type of tile you choose impacts durability, longevity, and maintenance. Materials needing special treatment, such as marble and travertine tile, will command a higher price. In addition, complex patterns and decorative trims can increase tile flooring installation cost considerably.

(Know more about type of Tile material and its Usage as per area of House in the Table below)

4. Additional materials and essentials – quality material such as grout, adhesive, underlayment, trim pieces, and sealant.

5. Labor costs for professional installation - There are a few variables that impact the rates contractors set, including Location, Expertise/ Experience, Installation Complexity (Such as installation with/ without spacer).

6. Removal of Old Tile and subfloor Repair – If you are renovating an old house then you must consider this cost as well which includes removal, repair and disposal of old tiles.

Tips for Cost-Effective Tile Installation

With strategic planning and smart choices, you can achieve both style and function without straining your finances. Below are some invaluable tips:

  • Explore different tiling materials and compare their properties, prices, and labor costs. While opulent materials like marble are undeniably beautiful, other alternatives offer the same aesthetic at a fraction of the price.

  • Buying tile in bulk or at reduced prices makes a difference, especially if you are working on multiple areas. Take advantage of sales so you can snag high-end options at a fraction of the original cost.

  • Carefully negotiate the Labor cost with your contractor. You can also save on labor costs by getting multiple estimates from different tilers.

Typical Tiles and Installation Cost in India

By understanding the breakdown of labour and material expenses, you can make strategic decisions about your tiling project that balance immediate budget constraints with long-term quality and satisfaction. With proper installations, tiles are generally more durable and resistant to wear and tear, giving you peace of mind and beauty to last for decades.

We have provided a tabular comparison below for you to know the typical tile installation costs in India. Before you read the table given below, you need to understand few terms and assumptions –

  • Components of Tile Installation Cost - has three components –

    • Tile Cost,

    • Installation Labor Cost and

    • Installation material cost like cement/ adhesive, grout, spacer etc.

  • Tile spacers are small plastic or rubber devices (crosses, T-shapes, or wedges) used during installation to maintain consistent gaps between tiles. They ensure straight, aligned grout lines, allow for expansion/contraction to prevent cracking, and help create a professional-looking, level surface. Adds only ~₹1–3/sq.ft in material and a small labor premium but gives uniform joints and better finish. We have provided two different tables below, one with spacer and one without spacer. Check with you civil contractor whether the pricing given by him includes spacer or not for comparison.

  • Cement Vs. Adhesive: Tile adhesive is better than cement because it provides stronger, more uniform bonding with a thinner layer, reducing tile debonding and cracking—especially for vitrified and large‑format tiles. Using tile adhesive instead of cement‑sand increases material cost by approximately ₹18 to ₹37 per sq.ft, depending on tile type and adhesive grade. I the table below we have given pricing with Adhesive. In case you are suing cement, you can reduce approximately ₹18 to ₹37 per sq.ft, depending on tile type for calculation.

  • City Variance: Rates in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore might be 5-10% higher than that given in table

  • Wastage: Always budget for an additional 10% in material costs to account for cutting and breakage during installation
